Many persons with MS (pwMS) suffer from impaired gait function, which is a valuable bodily function. Adequate assessment and rehabilitation strategies are advocated.
First, the educational lecture will present various walking capacity (fe T25FW, 2_6MWT) tests and perceived walking ability (fe MSWS-12) questionnaires. Strenght and weaknesses will be discussed for measuring mobility in early and late phases of disease progression. This will include psychometric properties including values for meaningful change as well as ecological validity. New metrics for quantifying motor fatigabiilty during walking test (fe, distance walk index) are presented. Besides, new quantitative measurement methods (fe, Gaitrite, APDM sensors) will be illustrated.
Second, the educational lecture will present evidence on the potential impact of exercise on the gait velocity, pattern and perceived effort. Exercise has been shown to potentially improve gait velocity. However, insights are needed which methods and (muscular) focus are most optimal.
Disclosure: Peter Feys is steering committee member of Neurocompass, participated to advisory board meetings of BIOGEN IDEC, and received teaching honoraria for EXCEMED and PARADIGMS.
