Abstract: EP1490
Type: Poster Sessions
Abstract Category: Pathology and pathogenesis of MS - Environmental factors
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system demyelinating disease. Known devastating and disabling, with lot of socioeconomic consequences. It affects more than 2 million people annually worldwide. The pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis is not well known although various predisposing factors are determined.
Number of Bariatric surgeries is increasing nowadays especially between young adults. Multiple neurological complications commonly peripheral neuropathy have been reported following such operations. A clear association between multiple sclerosis and bariatric procedures has not yet been established. Herein, we describe five patients diagnosed with MS following bariatric surgeries.
After getting the approval from the Institutional review board (IRB), This prospective study was conducted between January 2016 and January 2017 at King Fahd Hospital of the University, a tertiary medical center. All patients suffered neurological deficits following Bariatric surgeries were referred to our well established demyelinating diseases clinic. All patients underwent careful neurological examination, complete cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) study, enhanced cranial as well as spinal cord magnetic resonance (MR) images. McDonalds criteria (2010) was used for diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis in these patients.
Inclusion criteria:
Age: ≥ 18 years
Gender: both genders
Patients recovering from Bariatric operations
Exclusion criteria:
Previous diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis
Conclusion: Neurological complications following bariatric surgeries are not restrictedly dietary deficiencies related. Early recognizition of such complications as well as early referral to neurologists would help establishing needed investigations and diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Prospective multi center studies are warranted.
