Risk factors associated with falls in persons with multiple sclerosis: an observational study

Falls are one of the common symptoms in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). Since falls may result in decreased activity and participation and increased disability, it is important to determine risk factors, to develop outcome measures and to design fall prevention strategies. The purpose of this study is to identify risk factors for falls in pwMS.
Subjects who were definitely diagnosed with MS were included in the study. The outcome measures comprised Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and TUG cognitive form, Single Leg Stance Test (SLST), the Timed 25-Foot Walk (T25FW), Six Minute Walk Test (6MWT), 12-Item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale (MSWS-12), Activities-Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC), Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS) and Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS (BICAMS). The number of falls of the participants during the last 3 months was recorded.
In the study, 89 female and 32 male individuals with an average age of 35.29 ± 11.05 and an EDSS average of 1.20 ± 1.24 were included. A total of 118 falls were recorded from 39 participants (%32.23) who experienced falls. The duration of SLST, MSWS-12, MFIS and ABC were found to be significantly different between fallers and non-fallers (p< 0.05). Correlation was stated between SLST, 6MWT, MFIS, ABC and number of falls (rs= -0.235-0.388, p> 0.05).
Decrease in walking quality and balance confidence, balance impairments and increase in fatigue are risk factors associated with falls in pwMS. Approaches to these symptoms may be effective in reducing the rate and number of falls.
