Type: Poster Sessions
Abstract Category: Clinical aspects of MS - Epidemiology
Introduction: Ecuador has a low prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS). An epidemiological study conducted ten years ago showed that the prevalence of MS in Cuenca was 0.75/100,000 inhabitants. Since 2006, no new epidemiological studies have been carried out and we do not know if the prevalence has increased in the same way as it has in other regions of the world.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of multiple sclerosis in Cuenca and describe its epidemiological characteristics.
Methods: We performed a retrospective descriptive study from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. Patients included in the study were those who met the McDonald2010 criteria for MS and lived in Cuenca for at least one year. Patients come from third-level hospitals; Vicente Corral Moscoso, José Carrasco (third level public hospital), Del Río hospital, Santa Ana and Monte Sinaí (third level private hospitals), which are institutions of national reference for diagnosis and treatment of MS. Patients who did not live in Cuenca for over a year were excluded from the study.
Results: We identified 23 patients with MS, with a prevalence of 3.88 per 100.000 inhabitants (IC 95%, 2.29-5.47). The average age was 37.22 years old (SD +/- 12.42). Sixty one percent was female. The female to male ratio was 1.5:1. Seventy eight percent were relapsing-remitting MS, 8.7% clinical isolate syndrome and 13.05% progressive MS. The expanded disability status scale (EDSS) mean was 2.54 (SD +/- 1.73).
Conclusion: The prevalence of MS in Cuenca has increased in comparison to a previous report from 10 years ago. A limitation of this study is that it is not a community study and it is necessary to create a surveillance system which will allow for a better patient registry.
