Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative inflammatory demyelizing disease of the central nervous system. Algeria is considered a medium prevalence area of MS.
Objectives: Calculate the prevalence of MS in the city of Tlemcen and compare it with previous studies.
To study the demographic and clinical characteristics of MS in the city of Tlemcen
Patients and methods: Tlemcen is located in the far west of Algeria, 64 km from the Moroccan border and 520 km from the capital Algiers. Our study is descriptive transversal, it was extended over a period of 10 years (May 2008-May 2018) .the positive diagnosis was made according to the criteria of Mc Donald (2005,2010,2017). All our patients benefited from brain and spinal MRI as well as lumbar puncture. the statistical study was done by SPPS software version 17.0.
Results: The prevalence of MS as of May 1, 2018 was 41.5 / 100,000. The sex ratio was 3.05. The mean age of onset was 28.15 ± 6.1 years. A positive family history was found in 12.6%. 72.7% have relapsing-remitting MS 20.9% were secondary progressive MS, 69.3% were primary progressive MS.
Conclusion: The prevalence of MS in the city of Tlemcen has almost doubled in six years. Further studies are currently needed in other parts of Algeria as well as other Maghreb countries.
