Abstract: EP1470
Type: ePoster
Abstract Category: Pathology and pathogenesis of MS - Neuropsychology
Objetives: The purpose of this research was to determine the impact of personality features and mediational coping strategies, depression and stress on the course (functionality or EDSS and number of episodes) of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in first-line treatment.
Método: It was a cross sectional/correlational design. A sample of 74 venezuelan patients diagnosed with RR-MS in oral treatment with interferons was taken. They were tested by using Méndez Castellano Graffar Scale, Beck-II Inventory, Coping Strategies Inventory, Perceived Stress Scale (PPS-14) and NEO-FFI Test.
Results: Univariate and multivariate analysis were used. The predominant personality trait was Neuroticism, main coping strategy was Rational, a Medium Stress level on 71.62% and Low Depression level on 67.57% were found. A multivariate analysis route indicated that Responsibility had a positive impact on functionality (beta=0.29; p=0.05), however, with Detachment coping strategy as a mediator there was a negative impact on this variable. Extraversion trait (beta=-0.25; p=0.05) had also a negative impact on functionality. Neither Perceived Stress nor Depression explained variance of dependent variable and an explicative model of number of episodes was not revealed.
Conclusions: Personality traits and coping strategies would discreetly predict the course of the disease and will lead to perform plans of intervention and support.
