Abstract

Abstract: EP1469

Type: ePoster

Abstract Category: Pathology and pathogenesis of MS - Neuropsychology

Aim: To study the psychosocial data of people suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) who participated in a project named “Creation of cross border umbrella for protection of general population and people suffering from multiple sclerosis” which took place in Greece, in Crete"s island population. (PROSKP project).

Materials and methods: The study sample included 99 patients with MS diagnosis who were examined by MS mobile unit in Crete"s island. An especially designed questionnaire was completed by social workers and psychologists for the individuals who were examined. For data analysis, the SPSS version 18.0 was used.

Results: 19.2 % of the participants with MS diagnosis were from Heraclion perfection, 24.2% were from Lasithi, 35.4% were from Chania and 21.2% were from Rethimno prefecture. 51 patients with MS diagnosis were women and 48 were men. 73 participants were married, 17 were single, 5 were divorced, 2 were separated and 2 were widowed. Women with MS diagnosis seemed to be more vulnerable in depression than men (p< 0.05). Alcohol abuse and smoking were more common in men with MS diagnosis than women (p< 0.05). Moreover, the acceptance of MS illness is correlated with childbearing (p< 0.05). Relapses of MS disease were more often in patients with mood disturbances than patients without mood disturbances (p< 0.05).

Conclusions: Due to this program, we had the opportunity to study psychosocial data of people suffering from MS disease. Data analysis showed that the denial of the disease is more common in childless patients. Furthermore the relapses of MS illness are correlated with mood disturbances in patients with MS disease.
