Introduction: The emotional aspect of MS seems to be cause of great comorbidity for these patients. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the mental health of patients with MS, exploring the occurrence and severity of psychiatric disorders.
Methods: we evaluated 54 patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RR-MS) diagnosis confirmed by two experienced neuroimmunology specialized physicians from two neurological health units in Brasilia - Brazil. Three assessment scales were applied: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Inventory of Suicide of Beck (BSI), Hospital anxiety and Depression Scale (A-HAD and D-HAD). The results were evaluated using Prism ® version 6.
Results: Our sample was of 24% (13) men and 76% (41) women, the mean age was of 36 (18 - 60) y.o. regarding the labor, 50% were active and 50% were retired due to MS comorbidities. The mean score of the inability (EDSS) score was 3.0 (0.0 - 7.5), and the disease mean time was of 2, 4 (1 - 5) years. Considering the HAD scale, 22% (12) were classified with anxiety, 5% (3) with depression and 19% (10) with both. According to the BDI-II, 30% (16) were classified with minimal depression, 37% (20) with mild, 28% (15) moderate and 5% (3) severe. In line with the BSI, 31% (17)were considered with suicidal ideation, of these 18% (3) had made really suicide attempt; one was without medication, one using interferon and one fingolimod. Regarding the use of antidepressants, 35% (19) were in use of any medicament. Statistical analysis with Spearman test showed significant correlations between the BDI-II scale and age (r 0.35; p = 0.009); occupational situation (r 0.32; p = 0.02) and EDSS scale (r 0.4; p = 0.003). Also between the A-HAD scale and the illness total duration time (r0 .3; p = 0.03) and B-HAD scale and age (r 0.27; p = 0.04). Moreover, the BSI scale also had a positive correlation with the occupational situation (r 0.3; p = 0.05) and the use of antidepressant (r 0.38; p = 0.005).
Conclusion: It is important to highlight significant prevalence of psychiatric symptoms and possibility of suicide in MS patients. Characterizing another important MS feature. Therefore, it is suggested that should be a greater psychiatric approach to this patients, initiating the adequate treatment as soon as possible. Since there is a potential high death risk, it is indispensable to call the attention for this aspect and explore the best approaches to this issue.
